The ice age in North America
News of Agassiz’s glacier studies and grand ice age theory quickly spread to North America where they generated much excitement and took some authors by surprise. Clergyman and pioneering geologist Edward Hitchcock (1793–1864) published his popular text book Elementary Geology in 1840, then speedily produced a second edition in 1841 when he realized the significance of the new ideas from Europe:
The call for a second edition of this work so early has been unexpected. But I have exerted myself to adapt it to the advancing state of the Science. The most important addition related to the subject of Glaciers and Glacial Action, which is now exciting so great an interest in Europe … I have been favoured with an early access to the recent work of Agassiz, entitled Études sur les glaciers, and to some papers recently read before the London Geological Society by Agassiz, Buckland, and Lyell, on the same subject.
